SEOptimise Monthly Newsletter
2011 was a busy and exciting year here at SEOptimise. The year saw us grow at a rapid rate, with a new London office, lots of new staff, lots of big new clients, numerous speaker slots at the industry’s biggest conferences and a blogging award under our belt! We’ve also been adapting to some huge developments in the online marketing industry as a whole, so keep reading for SEOptimise’s 2011 highlights and a look ahead to this year…

Highlights from the SEOptimise blog

January was another busy month for the SEOptimise blog, with all the SEOptimise team writing posts. Here were the most popular:

SEOptimise opens in London!

One of the biggest bits of news for 2011 was the opening of our new London office, marking SEOptimise’s expansion into the capital. Our head office is still in Oxford, but with many of our clients based in London it made sense to have an additional office. Our brand new office is in Paddington Station.

The SEOptimise blog wins Best Blog at the UK Search Awards

We were extremely proud to be presented with the award for Best Blog at the inaugural UK Search Awards back in October. We’ve poured all our energy and enthusiasm into building up our blog, and it’s great to have that effort recognised with an award. Click here to get the latest from the SEOptimise blog.

The new and improved SEOptimise team

2011 saw the addition of many new members of staff to SEOptimise as the business continues to grow. On the Search Team we’ve now got Daniel Bianchini, Pak Hou Cheung and Gillian Cook working on SEO, and Shaad Hamid and Tamsin Mehew working on PPC. Over in Business Development, the (now not so) new faces are Daniel Braddock and Carla Nadin, whom some of you may already have met at Internet World last year. Last but not least, Nick Clarke joined the team in January as a copywriter. You can see photos of the SEOptimise team members new and old on our Meet the SEOptimise Team page, and you can expect to see everyone out and about at exhibitions and conferences in 2012!

The 2012 conference circuit

We love attending and speaking at conferences, and this year will be  no exception. Look out for us at SES, SMX, A4UExpo, SasCon, LinkLove, SearchLove, BrightonSEO and many more. SearchLove was a particular favourite with the Search Team last year, and Kevin and Stuart even made it over to PubCon in Las Vegas!

Industry updates

The world of Search is continually evolving, but 2011 was a year of particularly major change, which every last SEO has had to adapt to in order to stay in the game. The most significant change was undoubtedly the infamous Panda update, which prompted some big SEO strategy changes across the industry. With the increasing importance of social signals, the rolling out of SSL search, the launch of Google+ and Search Plus Your World, and other smaller but still significant changes such as the freshness update and the removal of Yahoo Site Explorer, it’s been a challenge staying abreast of all the latest developments! But that’s what makes SEO such a great industry to work in – we’re always kept on our toes and our knowledge is always growing and adapting. What could 2012 have in store?

SEO Overload – Why you Hire a Geek

Posted: 23 Feb 2012 11:52 PM PST

If you are one of the millions of people who glaze over when words like 'algorithm', 'statistics' and 'trend variations' start being tossed around in conversation then there is nothing unusual about that. A lot of webmasters hate hearing those words because they imply that there is more to SEO than good luck and good timing. We hate to burst their bubble, but SEO isn't a crap shoot or a gutsy gamble – it's a science built on accumulated data and fairly predictable results. Choosing to ignore is what is a gamble.

You have to have content, which is creative, but you also have to have an idea of keyword density, rewrite rules, and other data driven numbers and percentages. Adding in those scientific factors doesn't take away from the amount of creativity you can enjoy. If anything, it takes a tremendous amount of creativity to use them all effectively and still produce a good end product for your readers.

SEO can be subjective at times. While there will always be differences of opinion, and trial and error is a god part of certain aspects, objectivity is certainly not absent. There are a number of ways to approach your SEO and each has it's camp of cheerleaders, but regardless of the approach, the main principles are constant and the end result is always seen as the same.

The algorithms change, but they do exist, and at any given time there are definite rules which must be followed to achieve results. Panda is a perfect example of this. Sites that adjusted quickly thrived and ate up a lot of search results territory they previously didn't have. Those that failed to adjust or waited too long lost out big. A year later, some still haven't adjusted.

Google, Yahoo and Bing's algorithms are ever changing, which is why there is always a need for SEOs who are full on geeks that  reverse-engineer those algorithms and find the cracks to exploit. The more you know about the algorithms, the better you can attack them and adjust to any changes in the future. If you have been depending on luck and wishes from genies in a bottle, you need to adjust. Again, SEO is a science!

You need to use all the data you can gather to make decisions effectively. There is no point in only using a little data when there is a world of data out there that can be easily analyzed. Find out what applies to you, see what you can do with it and then act on it. You have to create a benchmark against which to score your Content, Keyword Choices, PageRank, Indexation, Internal Links, Inbound Links, Hierarchical Linking Structure, HTML Templates and CSS

Examine all urls, title tags, internal anchor text, keyword prominence, H1s, and meta descriptions to make sure that everything is as it should be. Deconstruct your site and distill all the data you can from each component to figure out what your algorithm should be. Once you do that, you have completed a scientific assessment of your current SEO and how to improve it through a logical progression of steps. That is when you will see true SEO success!

Pinterest – Time to Get On “Board”!

Posted: 23 Feb 2012 05:54 AM PST

If you don't know about Pinterest, any SEO will tell you that you are missing a powerful new platform on the web. Pintrest, which allows users to pin content to their virtual pinboards has grown faster than any platform in recent memory – maybe ever. With rapid success however generally comes a rapid infusion of problems that cause headaches for everyone in the process – particularly those unaware of being involved in it.

The problem as many content sources saw it was that anyone could pin anything to Pinterest, and attribution did not always follow with those pins. Copyright infringement is a particularly touchy area for anyone, and on Pinterest it appeared to be running rampant even though it was in many cases wholly unintentional. Many users thought that by using the pin button, whatever they pinned automatically attributed correctly. That was not always the case. There was also the issue of intellectual property being presented in a manner the owner did not desire and all without compensation back to the owner.

Pinterest addressed this increasingly pressing problem by issuing a code to any site owner that would allow their content to be blocked from being pinned to any boards on Pinterest. It may not be the perfect solution, but SEOs will tell you it is a step in the right direction. At a time when many big online companies are getting things wrong, Pinterest appears to at least be trying to do right by everyone.

Another issue with Pinterest is the rising number of nude pics being posted – which is in direct violation of Pinterest's flat "no nudity" rule. However, recent uploads has SEOs asking, "Is Pinterest the new Pornterest?" It is a question that is running wild through the SEO community as Pinterest scrambles trying to figure out what to do about pornography seemingly taking a chokehold on the popular pinboard sharing site. While Pinterest has not interest in hosting pornography, many pinners seem to have a different opinion. While there is no statistical breakdown as to how much pornography has invaded Pinterest, if you kick around ten minutes, odds are you'll find some between boards about throw pillows and memes.

The Pinterest TOS is very clear that nudity is not allowed, nor is hateful content, but that has not stopped it from spamming in like there is no tomorrow. It is the big porn hosts under proxies that are likely responsible for some of it, but not surprisingly, it is mainly a lot of individuals that think Pinterest makes a great place to share their favorite nudie pics that are swarming over it.

Pinterest has a reporting system in place which is being used at record rates according to a longtime pinner. To their credit. Pinterest is responding with quick takedowns and bans as well as a proactive approach to finding the offensive material on their own and removing it before complaints come in. Any SEO will tell you that is a winning approach and one of the reasons Pinterest is one of the hottest destinations on the web right now.

SEO Headlines Make Headlines!

Posted: 22 Feb 2012 05:35 AM PST

Writing good headlines isn't just for newspapers. It is a skill needed by everyone producing online content. Without a good headline to hook a reader, you have far less of a chance of being read and creating conversions than you need to succeed. With the need for SEO always entrenched in your mind, your title may need to be keyword optimized, so you may not have the freedom to be too creative. SEO counts big time in titles – don't ever forget that!

If you feel the need to be creative, you can use your subtitle to draw attention. Just be careful not to get too cute with it. This post, for example, is about how to write a good headline.  I could have used a subtitle to jazz it up. But what should I have used? Is there one style that is more effective than others?

People like to be shocked and stunned – that is why horror movies do so well. They also like to read about things that are sexy, exciting or new. Good headline writers know these things and use them to their advantage. They also know that humor is appreciated, as are references to common culture. The key is figuring out what fit's the tone and topic you are working with – as well as where the content is going to wind up – not everyone appreciates shock, sexiness or shares your humor.

Let's see what kind subtitles could have been selected for this post that work with what we have discussed above.

Why People Share Pictures More Than Articles (If possible use a scientific discovery showing percentages of people who pictures versus articles – you do need to substantiate what you say)

Sexy Photos Unveil Secrets (sex sells – don't be afraid to use it if you have the chance to!)

Exciting Ways to Spice up Your Headlines (oooh, excitement and information!)

Headlines – the Good, The Bad and the Ugly (everyone knows that movie and it gets your attention)

How Headlines Affect Your Bottom Line (haha!)

News at Eleven Words (eleven is about all you can get away with)

Do you get the idea yet? You are probably writing about something more intriguing than how to write a headline, so put on your thinking cap and be creative. Get more people to choose to read your article than the one next to it in the SERPs, and see your links and conversions rise as a result. You don't have to be a master wordsmith to write a good headline – just a little creativity.

The key to it all is knowing your content and your audience. With that information alone you literally have limitless ways to write a catchy headline. Don't fall back on rehashing what everyone else has done over and over again. Don't write headlines and subheads that don't deliver what they promise. Find a balance between crating a moment that makes the reader double take to make sure they read you right and being informative. And just like a joke – don't give away the punch line soon – there is a difference between getting attention and giving away the cow and the milk.

SEO in 2012

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 05:32 AM PST

http://www.4seo.es/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/SEO-2012.bmp

It's time to take what you learned in 2011 and put it into action in case you haven't done so already! Everyone has a little lag after the new year rings in, but it is high time to get motivated! Take a quick inventory of what is in your arsenal. If you used any sort of tools (hit counters, analytics, keyword generators) in 2011, you have likely learned a few things. If you have any sort of seasonal slump, you know it now. You should have learned which pages on your site were high functioning, and which were a waste of space. This is all important information to work with.

This is great news! It means you are positioned for 2012 to be even better – if you use your head. The main mistake a lot of website managers make in the new year is resolving to 'do it right' this year – then rushing off and finding a whole new way to 'do it right' and completely ignoring everything they learned the year before. Unless your site tanked, there is no need for an overhaul – just minor adjustments.

Suppose that you noticed that a lot of the links you got in 2011 haven't helped you much if at all. Instead of figuring out which ones are useless and why, you rush out and sign up for a service that offers you x number of links in x days thinking that will fix everything. In reality, you just compounded your problem.

If you really looked at your situation, you'd see that a lot of the sites you linked from had little or no Page Rank so they had no juice to pass on to you. What you need to do now is concentrate on link building from sites with good PR, not just getting more bulk links. Does your new service offer THAT?  If not, find one that does because that is what you need.

If you notice that all your pages that were constructed for 50 cents a page by a cheap outsource freelancer and that you have a really high bounce rate, maybe you need to consider hiring better writers. It will cost more, but no matter what they say, content is always king. Without quality content you are dead in the water.  Keyword stuffed content might get traffic, but traffic is no good without conversions and lousy content does not compel conversions.  Using an SEO Service that produces quality content and will stand behind their work is a good option.

In other words, sure – look for new outlets and ways to get things accomplished – but don't ignore what you learned already! Make 2012 better than 2011 by applying your knowledge to your new efforts. Emphasize what worked and tweak what didn't. massive change is rarely the answer. Small quality upgrades the key!

Evolution of E-Commerce Navigation and the User Experience

People won’t use your Web site if they can’t find their way around it. – Steve Krug, usability specialist and author of “Don’t Make Me Think, A Common Sense Approach to Web Usability”

Navigation isn’t a popular topic, but having seen its evolution and its effect on CRO, we decided to do some research, specifically around e-commerce navigation. Special thanks to the folks at the Wayback Machine who created the digital capsule that allowed us to take screenshots of navigation from a time long forgotten — 1998 and beyond!

Navigation plays a vital role in making sure a Web surfer will stay on your website rather than bounce out. If a user can’t find what he is looking for, he is likely to bounce off your website. If you run an e-commerce website where a sale or a bounce is just one click away, navigation becomes even more critical. A clear, organized and consistent navigation will help users find products in the minimum number of clicks.

Pinterest, the social network built around a virtual pinboard interface, has shown explosive growth, reaching 10 million U.S. users faster than any service to date.

The first months of 2012 have given the social media debutant plenty of attention. A look at Google Search Insights shows that early media coverage heralded the service as a standout in a crowded social media space. Skyrocketing growth suggests fatigued social media users were indeed looking for something new; the low level of investment required to participate coupled with dazzling visual rewards seems to have proven a winning combination.

The marketing and business community has been quick to dissect Pinterest in search of conversion-driving opportunity. Businesses are finding different ways to use the service, to interesting effect.

It's also important to know who's using Pinterest. Pinterest users are predominantly women, at 80 percent. And the average user spends 15 minutes a time on the site.

If you decide to add Pinterest to your online marketing portfolio, remember the marketing fundamentals as you play with the shiny new platform. With Pinterest, as with all channels, conversion rate optimization should underlie your efforts to ensure ROI at the end of the day.

Google+ has improved spam comment blocking and reporting. Users now have the option to remove a comment, restore a comment or "remove and block" a commenter.

The first official Facebook conference for marketers, being called fMC, takes place at the end of the month in New York City. The invite-only event underlies the company's intent to encourage advertising with the social platform.

The Google bar was updated, and along with it, the minimalist Google home page saw the first addition of a non-search feature. A field for sharing on Google+ was added to the top right corner of the Google home page, where it remains on the Google bar as a user navigates through Google properties.

  Word on the Wire

Co-chairman of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has appealed to the programming community to not overlook Firefox, Internet Explorer and Opera browsers when programming for the Web. Apple Safari and Google Chrome's dominance is threatening the open Web as programmers have taken to commonly using features only supported by WebKit - a rendering engine for Safari and Chrome.

Facebook filed an initial public offering, and the company is expected to be valued between $75 billion and $100 billion. The company had $1 billion profit last year, and 85 percent of revenues come from advertising, with social gaming and fees making up the rest.

Bing is testing a new design for its search results. The look has more white space as a result of the changes, which include the removal of links from the header, the removal of location information, the removal of vertical tabs and icons to replace some text.

YouTube changed its terms with content partners - video owners that share ad revenue - requiring that partners' videos play on all platforms. Previously, content partners could choose not to allow their content to play on some devices, and could in turn make separate deals with distributors like Netflix or Xbox.

LinkedIn blew away Q4 earnings estimates, with premium subscriptions and marketing solutions revenues showing huge growth. The company also reached 150 million members.

The number of Apple devices and computers sold to date paint a fascinating picture of personal computing and the history of the company. Apple sold more iOS devices (156 million) in 2011 than it sold Macs (122 million) in the 28 years of their existence.

A new report of how Americans spend time and money toward media consumption shows that consumers increasingly make Internet connectivity a priority. The percent paying for broadband Internet is up almost 5 percent. Homes subscribing to wired cable has decreased. And households that subscribe to broadband Internet and free cable TV are streaming twice as much video online as the general population.

New research reports that in the past six months, 59 percent of Facebook users have "liked" a brand or company page. The survey suggests that "likes" gained by a brand mean a user is only 13 percent "much more likely" to purchase from that brand.

A version of the Google Chrome browser for the Android mobile operating system has been released in beta. Chrome for Android does not support Adobe Flash.

Apple is expected to announce the iPad 3 in early March, featuring improved graphics processing unit and around a 2048 x 1536 Retina Display. Apple credits iPad innovations as inspiration for the new Mac OSX Mountain Lion, set for release in summer.

U.S. and E.U. regulators gave their approval for Google to acquire Motorola Mobility, one of the biggest Android hardware makers and a company with a portfolio of 17,000 patents. The sign-off came with a warning that Google not abuse the patents or it may face antitrust scrutiny.

Hacktivist (hacker activist) group Anonymous brought down the CIA website. The DDoS attack was the latest act of protest against law enforcement agencies and copyright holders, retaliation for a raid on file sharing service Megaupload.

Which is used more in Japan, Yahoo! or Google? A newly published survey of Japanese search engine use shows that Yahoo is the most popular search engine, and Yahoo users are more likely to make multiple searches in a day compared to Google users.

On Valentine's day, the highest volume search phrase on Yahoo! was "How to tie the ribbon," offering insight into the gift-giving minded population.

The online Australian advertising market grew 17 percent year-over-year in 2011 to $2.66 billion, defying the challenges facing the broader media market. The results revealed the online advertising market has slowed from 21 percent growth in 2010 to 17 percent in 2011, with search and directories leading the growth.

On February 6, a search engine called Volunia, developed by Massimo Marchiori and a team of 14 Italians, was launched following three years of development. Marchiori is also the creator of HyperSearch, which is credited for shifting the focus of ranking based on single pages to the relationship of pages to the rest of the Web.

Volunia is different from the other search engines, like Google or Yahoo, because it is based on interactions of the users. Being called a "third generation search engine," Volunia builds the ranking of websites through the comments or opinions of the people. As Marchiori says "Volunia is a Social Search Engine, that it allows people to share their experience on the web, Volunia is not a competitor of Google. With Volunia, it will be possible to search for something and also to meet other people who are searching. That’s why we have called it Seek & Meet."

Volunia is currently in beta. Use the sign-up form to try it out.
