Elephant Links – and How to Deal with Them

Posted: 30 Aug 2011 11:59 PM PDT

robots.txtAre you in a situation where you notice that your site is filled with links you would rather not have but can't really get rid of? Remember back when you were first setting up your site and begged everyone for links?  You set up your site, hit up all of your friends and family members for links, and now those non-relevant, off topic, zero PageRank links from blogs and little personal sites are dragging you down an endless spiral.

The only problem is that removing those links may wind up hurting people's feelings which is more damaging than what their links are doing to you. Is there anything you can do to keep the Google spiders from crawling your site and seeing these unwelcome links?

In the past, we have spent some time covering information regarding what sites to link to, what backlinks will be worth the most,  and how to avoid links that will hurt your site. But what if you jumped into link building the wrong way when you first set up your site, and you have some links that are sitting there like an elephant in the room no one wants to talk about doing anything about?

There is good news, you are not really stuck with those links forever. You don't have to hurt anyone's feelings or make enemies by deleting those links which are not helping you. You can easily direct search engine spiders to discount links, pages and even whole directories if need be and it's very simple to do.  'Disallow', 'no-index' and 'no-follow' are useful tools to keep bad or unwanted links and/or junk pages from hurting your site so much.  Eventually you will have to clean house thoroughly, but if you are short on man-hours, here is a temporary quick fix.

Add a 'no-follow' attribute to 'bad' links and 'disallow' spiders to access those awful pages. You can add a no-follow to a link simply by adding it to the HTML like this:
<a href="http://www.link-not-good.com/"rel="nofollow">don't look! </a>.

You can put a page disallow in your root folder added to the robots.txt file.

User-agent: *

Disallow: /bad-page/keep/out.html

You should also very specifically link to each page for the highest relevance. Categorize your links carefully and matching them to the best pages in your site will help strengthen your website from within. It is no secret that you need strong internal site architecture to compete in a consumer satisfaction driven environment!

As for the reciprocal links from family and friends, consider a 'Friends of (your sitename)' page,  and have the less relevant links listed there. They are still mentioned so it's not like they are totally being abandoned, but you also are not lagging behind by featuring them. You can no-follow each link, or simply disallow the whole page if that makes more sense. This also lends a little extra 'testimonial' style to your site for visitors as well; it's like seeing your 'followers' .

Link Selling – Dark Shades of Gray

Posted: 29 Aug 2011 06:30 PM PDT

http://www.greyareagallery.org/files/gimgs/49_grey-area.jpgSelling links is getting into a very gray and shady territory, and by entering that world you can sink yourself very quickly by following black hat tactics!

The world of SEO is a dangerous place most know only a tiny bit about! As the old saying goes, sometimes a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. You cannot read a few blog posts, mostly understand the basics and then go to work on your website in the manner a professional would. The mistakes that can be made in this situation are both numerous and potentially lethal to the health of your site. This is particularly true in the world of link exchanges. In general, the more relevant inbound links a website has, the better the site ranking will be.

As often happens when people have a less than full understanding of a concept, some people twisted this knowledge by leaving out the all important word 'relevant.'  While the  link-exchange industry has boomed, not all have boomed by the book. Link exchanges are not as simple or straightforward as they appear on the surface. There are many details that must be fulfilled for a link to be of value.

A link is in many ways a nod of approval between websites. When you link your site to another website, search engines count it as a recommendation of that site by you. You are vouching for that site to be a quality site. Page rank, which is calculated from a complicated algorithm,  boils down to the simple concept of high is good. If you spend a lot of time on your website adding pages and pages of unique keyword rich content, keep updating frequently, and over time get other high-page-rank sites link to you, then Google is going to rate your site higher as far as PageRank is concerned. You will probably rank well for SERPs as well assuming you have done your keyword targeting correctly.

What does it take to get high PageRank?

* Make sure that the site you are linking to has good content that will add value to your own visitors' experiences. When a visitor follows a link off of your page, they should not land on a bogus website. If a recommendation by your site leads people to trust your opinion, then they will come back to you!
* Be aware if a reciprocal link from this other site will do you any good. Low PageRank sites should only be linked out to in cases of extreme value and relevancy.

Link building is a job that should only be started if you understand the ramifications of it and  correctly utilize and understand the tools that are available to you and make sure that your decisions are based on data.

Even if you think you haven't done anything wrong, you can be accused of link spamming if you are not careful. Watch out for unscrupulous link directories and sites that operate with little or no oversight. Use the techniques outlined above to make sure that you're posting to relevant sites/directories/ articles/ blogs or wherever you choose to submit your content and links.

Linking software creators claim that you can get thousands of back links with the press of a button or for only "$89″. The only way to get good quality back links is to do the research yourself and hand-submit every single link. Otherwise you are basically torpedoing your own site and the work you put into it. Rather than doing that, use an SEO firm that does the work manually and gives you a list of where your links are coming from and the PR of each site so that you know everything is operating above board.

Amazing! Who on Earth would want to wear a sweatshirt like this one?

I mean, this is completely disgusting! It even has the greasy look of cheap pizzas… Furthermore, there is no mushrooms or anchovies… :-)

More Than 30 Google+ Tools, Extensions, Tutorials and Other Resources

Posted: 26 Aug 2011 07:32 AM PDT

The Google+ honeymoon might be over but many people are still active on the site. As Google+ has some shortcomings, lacking features and usability flaws, there are now numerous tools to deal with these issues. I’ve compiled a list of the most promising ones.

I haven’t tested all the tools, just a few, so please report issues in the comments. I have chosen only those that seemed to make sense and have been recommended by other publishers or social media friends of mine.

Web Tools and Resources

  • Google+ Statistics – Google+ statistics shows not only who the most popular users and posts on Google+ are; it also discloses the percentage of women on Google+. It’s only 12%, according to the service.
  • Google+ Lists / Google+ Counter  - on gpc.fm people are creating Twitter-like lists of people. The members are displayed according to the number of circles they have been put into. This is not perfect yet, as the search for SEO and the best “top SEO/SEM Professionals” shows, but it’s a good start when you search people in a specific category.
  • Google+ Directory – this is a Google+ user directory you can submit to. Thus looking for an SEO you’d find unknown people who depend on such directory submissions rather than the really important industry figures. It’s helpful to find SEO specialists in your area though, I guess, as you can combine both search parameters.
  • Google+ Suggested Users – this is an unofficial list of recommended users. There are no SEO specialists listed, but the list of recommended bloggers, for example, is quite decent.
  • Google+ Search – this is a Google Custom Search engine that searches Google+ profiles and public updates.
  • PlusFeed – Unofficial Google+ User Feeds – this simple tool creates an RSS feed for your public Google+ updates. It can’t see the ones you share with circles only.

Firefox and Chrome Extensions

There are lots of Chrome and Firefox extensions for Google+ now. Many of them just work on the Chrome browser, but some work on Firefox by way of being a script for the Greasemonkey extension. Most of the Firefox extensions require one of the latest Firefox versions, and one needs even Firefox 9. I don’t update my FF that often for backwards compatibility reasons, thus I couldn’t test most of them.

Tutorials and Solutions

Tools Lists

Misc. Google+ Tools

Do you already use these or other Google+ tools? Do you like them? Do they work? Do you know better ones than those I have mentioned? Please add your comments and suggestions below in the comment section!

What Does “Don’t Be Evil” Mean?

Posted: 28 Aug 2011 11:22 PM PDT

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_C_VIrPWYgBg/Sybsxy7whPI/AAAAAAAAAB4/-U9VceWWhOY/s320/White+top+hat.jpgSometimes, with hard work and plenty of sweat equity,  you finally manage to fight and claw your way up to the top of the SERPs. As you stand back and proudly gaze upon your hard work your smile disappears when you see an upstart with an apparently absent conscience has undone it all. What do you do when some website owner decides to play dirty and ruins the time, energy and sometimes even money that you have invested?

We all hate the black hatters – you're not alone in this. The black hatters are the ones who come in, stand on our back and our careful work and steal the spotlight and rankings we poured ourselves into earning. These are the content scraping, link buying, bottom dwelling scum that make our lives miserable. These are the ones that play by their own rules and let the vodies hit the floor without a second thought.

How do we deal with a black hatter that is ruining our work? We take comfort that black hat tactics hardly ever last for any significant amount of time. Usually the SERPs catch on fairly quick and take action. We actively watch for plagiarism – of our own work and others because it negatively impacts all of us. Sometimes community policing and pressure work the best.  We report link buying and other Webmaster Guideline violations as soon as we spot them. In short, we play hardball.

What we don't do is stoop to their level using fire to fight fire. I'm the sort of person who always glares at the cars parked in the fire lane at the front of the store. I'm the person that gets angry at the people driving them who will get in and out faster in the pouring rain even though they have no right to be treated special. I know if I even park there for a second to grab a paper out of the machine so I don't have to get the baby out of the car, I will be immediately issued a ticket by a cop who will show up out of nowhere. Sometimes that is just the way it works. Some people cheat and scam and get away with it – for awhile- while others cannot for a second.

That's OK. It keeps me honest. I park where I am supposed to, stay out of the way, and don't end up like that guy at the diner a few months ago. He had parked his truck and trailer up alongside the building instead of back away from the restaurant where there was room, and when the man at table four had a heart attack the ambulance and fire rig had to park far away due to a cheater.

Guess who got screamed at by the firemen, paramedics, police and the diner owner as well. Who was issued a citation and banned from the restaurant ever more – just escaping arrest? You guessed it – it wasn't me, but I saw it all and it reminded me of why we don't cheat. We don't just avoid cheating in the physical world, we avoid cheating in the virtual world as well because it is wrong, eventually we will get caught, and we will pay the price for it.

Same goes for staying white hat. Don't yield to temptation looking for a quick blast of success. Don't be evil! It will all balance out in the end. Karma is the dickens! Play by the rules and you will win in the long run – just like the patient tortoise racing the hare.

Why You Need an SEO Writer

Posted: 27 Aug 2011 04:16 PM PDT

http://www.pinepressprinting.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/copywriter-screen.gifDoes it feel like you never have the time to write your own content? Do you have worries about doing something wrong? Are you confused about linking even after reading enough guides to make your spin?  if so, you are far from being alone. While a vast number of entrepreneurs think that doing your own SEO is almost mandatory, the truth is you are often better off outsourcing it to SEO professionals. Lets look at the reasons to hire a reputable firm to help you get your site off of the ground.

Hiring an SEO firm means that you don't lose bits and pieces in the shuffle. While you may attain an understanding about some aspects of SEO, you may miss others along the way just because you do not know about them. Another possibility is that you become proficient in some areas, passable in others and never quite catch on to a few other skills. This is the exact type of situation in which a little knowledge applied improperly can be a big problem.

Even if you are working with a tight budget, the little bit you do spend on SEO is likely to supply you with some original content geared towards increasing your visibility and improving your chances not only on the SERPs, but for targeted advertising as well. That is not a bad deal by any means.

If you are struggling to optimize, then you need keyword specific content. Keyword specific content is used to drive traffic your way, ensuring any AdSense on your site will work to it's peak specifications. It does you absolutely no good to promote a site for one thing only to mistakenly wind up with advertising for something else entirely.

A good SEO article from a good company won't be cheap. If an SEO company is giving away free or very cheaply priced content, the odds are you need to spend some time going over it. You can find writers who are capable of turning out good content for less, but it may not be very SEO friendly content. There is a difference between content that reads well and content that reads well and is also SEO friendly.

An SEO firm is like a homeopathic doctor in certain regards. They will take a look at your whole site rather than just one aspect  of it. At least that is what they should be doing, because SEO is about more than just the keywords.  Beware of any SEO company that attempts to tell you that optimization is only about linking or is solely based on the content. There is a symbiotic relationship between all aspects of your site that when combined properly makes for good SEO.

Strong content won't overcome poor linking. Similarly no amount of PageRank will make up for sloppy article writing that is nonsensical gibberish written by people with little ability to convey useful information. Sooner or later everyone has seen keyword stuffed blocks of words that make no sense. If they make no sense to you as a reader, it won't take long before the Eps realize they make no sense either.  An SEO can provide you with an honest evaluation of your site, and help you pinpoint areas that need the most work.

Once you have decided you are better off using an SEO firm than going at it yourself, you need to find a good one. SEO firms may advertise that they guarantee a top result in the SERPS, or a certain amount of traffic within a specified timeframe, but you have to understand that they don't control the search engines or the consumers – they can only predict and plan based on past patterns of behavior. Choose wisely because it is your money, your site, and your business on the line.

Don’t Cloak Like a Black Hatter!

Posted: 23 Aug 2011 05:59 PM PDT

http://us.cdn2.123rf.com/168nwm/kurashov/kurashov1006/kurashov100600035/7117096-mysterious-man-wearing-a-black-hat-and-a-black-coat-with-a-raised-collar.jpgCloaking is one of the more common SEO black hat techniques that you may run across. There are still some SEO professionals using this technique to optimize their websites or those of their client. Unlike the many other SEO techniques available, cloaking is not all that evident to the users if at all – even to those who have a general idea of how it all works. Because of that, you need to make sure that when you hire a SEO company, they are not engaging in any black hat techniques which includes cloaking when they optimize your website.

Let's take a quick look at this cloaking so we can see how it is implemented. In white hat optimization, the content that the visitor views will be the same as the content that is seen when a search engine spider visits your site. The content is delivered based on the User-Agent HTTP header that will indicate the nature of the user who is requesting the given page. The IP address which is also used to deliver visitor based content will be consistent as well. When cloaking is employed there will be different content that is delivered to the search engines using server side scripting. That content will not be visible to the visitors, nor will be it be visible on the regular pages of the website. In simple terms, cloaking techniques are used to scam the search engines.

Sometimes, cloaking is used to try to trick  visitors with the intent of trying to attract them to a particular site which is different from the site that they believe they are being directed to. For instance a person may believe they are going to visit a site with information on skin cancer, but instead they could find them self staring at a site that has images of naked people instead. All too often, sites featuring adult themed content use this method to get unsuspecting visitors into their site. Every major search engines considers cloaking to be a black hat SEO trick. Usually if any site is detected using a cloaking technique it is removed from the SERP listing.

In DMOZ, human editors  review websites before they approve them. Those persons are very skilled at what they do and have the proper tools to ferret out any deceptive practices to circumvent the rules making it an almost futile gesture to try. Though it might be very tempting use cloaking to get better ranking and to get some quick visitors you can ruin your website's reputation for life by engaging in such practices. Once your website gets bad reputation among the search engines, it gets rather difficult to run away from the effects.

It was 1996 and the World Wide Web was just a glittering apparition of the sprawling cyberspace it would come to be. Yet, with just a comparatively few sites to speak of, a few imaginative technology buffs could envision a bustling future online.

Looking back today, it appears that his timing was ideal. Bruce Clay had been involved in tech companies for decades, an executive for companies like ACER and Microvertics. Although in a position many would envy, in the mid-90s business world, he was feeling more out of touch with the action than ever. Signing checks and hacking through bureaucratic red tape felt tiresome and unrewarding.

"Although I did have a lot of interest in business, I wanted something that combined marketing and business and technical, and could utilize a lot of my programming skills," Bruce recalls.

Local Internet Marketing: Drive Traffic Online and Offline

Surprising as it may be, it's still not uncommon for local brick-and-mortar businesses to be without a website. In fact, a 2009 figure from Ad-ology showed approximately 46 percent of small businesses still did not have a site. And for those local companies with a website, many still do not take advantage of all the search optimization tactics available to help drive traffic to their place of business.

We're currently in an era where local businesses comprise a large share of searches online; 20 percent, in fact, of all searches have a local intent, according to a Google report from 2009.

In this article, we'll look at the rise of local search and Google's investment in it, what a holistic local search strategy is comprised of and how local brick-and-mortars can make the most of their marketing dollars by driving traffic to their place of business through the Internet.

Perhaps it is best to start off by saying that I am no designer. However, when I felt the need to start producing Engagement Objects for client websites, principles of design instantly sprang to mind.

There have been quite a few changes recently, as search engines redefine what it means to be a successful page on the Internet. Going, going, gone are the days that a few strategically placed keywords in the HTML and a directory link or two could push one to the first page for a competitive keyword.

Infographics make a pretty big difference preventing visitors to your site from bouncing straight off again. Engaging infographics will make users stop and take a look, effectively causing them to actually notice what your site has to offer.

BCI has been around since 1996, and in that time, the website has been updated few times, the last being 2006 - five years ago.

It would be an understatement to say a lot has changed since then, and we were due for a site that matched our current level of service.

We unveiled the new BCI website at the Search Engine Strategies conference in San Francisco just last week, and haven't yet made the official announcement.

We're giving you a sneak peek while we continue to test, make adjustments and add functionality before an official announcement to the public.

Please check it out, play around and next month, you'll have an opportunity to provide feedback in a simple survey through the newsletter.

Localware offers a month-to-month retainer ranging from $1,000 to $2,000 per month, and provides powerful tools, training and strategy. Its satisfaction guarantee ensures clients can cancel at any time without worrying about a contract agreement.

The World Wide Web celebrated it's 20th birthday this month. In August of 1991, Tim Berners-Lee opened the Web for business, describing it as a project that "merges the techniques of information retrieval and hypertext to make an easy but powerful global information system."

In its first earnings report since becoming a publicly held company, professional social network LinkedIn beat estimates, reporting 160 percent increase in revenue and 61 percent membership growth.

After weeks of testing with a select group of advertisers, Facebook released an ad API that allows developers to create tools with greater ad targeting and analytics gathering capabilities and like-gating, or walls for unique content only available to the Facebook users that "Like" a page.

Marketing through social media channels is reaching mass adoption, with 80 percent of companies with 100 or more employees engaged in SMM. A reported 54 percent of marketers involved in social media marketing said they were satisfied with their SMM campaigns. While Facebook and Twitter lead the pack, 20 percent of those marketers surveyed said they planned to expand social media advertising to YouTube, LinkedIn and foursquare in the next year.

Google announced they have now made the Google+1 button faster. The button's response time and page loading is now up to 3 times faster. The change is automatic and webmasters do not need to update their code.

Google also released a new version of its webspam reporting form that is simpler and includes more options and more information.

  Word on the Wire

Google's social network saw a number of additions this month, including Mobile Circles, additional photo organization abilities, a faster +1 button and more choices for video chatting.

Google also said, following much demand, that profile pages for businesses on its social network Google+ will be available by the fall.

Research by Search Engine Land editor Danny Sullivan suggests that connections in Google+ can strongly influence organic search results. Among the few brands testing brand pages on the service, it appears that when a user follows a brand, results from that brand's website see a boost in search.

Keeping in mind the latest estimates by Google of India's Internet population growing to 100 million and being Google's third largest market in the world, Bruce Clay and notable Industry bigwigs shared their viewpoints on the growing importance of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) in India over a cup of tea and a sumptuous Business Breakfast at the Leela Kempinski Gurgaon.

Spearheading the discussions was Bruce Clay who was joined by Avijit Dutt (President Marcom, Olive Telecom), Vikram Malhi ( GM, Expedia), Devdutta Banerjee (Regional Director, Starwood Asia Pacific), Nikhil Ganju (Country Manager Trip Advisor) and Jasdev Singh (Director Market Management Expedia). A few key points from the discussion were:

  • Looking at the rising PPC costs (up to 30 percent), SEO is becoming a increasingly viable strategy for businesses in India.
  • Competition is a major factor for rising digital advertising costs in light of which SEO is being looked upon as an important tool in Indian brands' online plans.
  • Another key point was that in large organizations, SEO strategy tends to be controlled by the head office. Keeping in mind the rise of local, this probably is not the best case scenario and there is a need for decentralization in the SEO strategy adopted.

Google's Head of Indian Operations Rajan Anandan in a chat with Economic Times revealed that India's 100 million internet users spend about 16 hours a week online. Comparing this with TV's 13 to 14 hours a week, this is pretty significant.

According to the latest survey by IMAI (Internet & Mobile Association of India) India's online display advertising market is slated to grow by 28% from Rs 417 crore (in 2009-2010) to Rs 534 (in 2010-2011). Interestingly Social Media marketing spend grew by 54 percent.
