Do You Need a Business Blog?

Posted: 31 Jul 2011 05:31 PM PDT

http://businesstraining.com/resources/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/small-business-blog.jpgYou need a business blog – and not just because everyone else is telling you that you need one as well. You need a business blog because for many site owners it is one of the surest and quickest ways to help boost the search rankings for their site. Let's take a look at a few top reasons regarding why you need a business blog for your site.

One of the main reasons that websites fail to attain the type of high search engine rankings that their webmasters/owners never get a sufficient amount of links to the site established. Link building is as fundamental as using a coherent  copywriter. There are a few ways to get more links to your content. Writing good content that people actually want to read and link to is the best first step. Let's be blunt – if your content reads like it was thrown together by someone writing in a language that is not their mother tongue and makes little or no sense – your site is doomed. Period. Content needs to be coherent at the least – good content gets links.

The second way to get links to your site is to use your blog and do a little "self linking" back to your site. It isn't cheating or even a frowned upon practice. If you use the double whammy of placing good content on your blog that links back to good content on your site that gets visitors saying "Wow! These people have their stuff together!" then it is highly likely you will get more links.

There is no better way to highlight that you know what you are talking about than via placing knowledgeable content on your blog. The continued posting of informative content on your blog is what builds a subscriber base and sets the foundation for a virtual army of fans that will often link to you further building your site's search ability. The bottom line is that search engines devour quality content. If you give them a steady diet of high end information rich content they will reward you. If you give them low grade dog food you will pay the price sooner rather than later. Do yourself a favor and get an experienced SEO copywriter and SMM manager and let them take your business blog, site and you to the top.

The Submitedge Scam Fighting Strategy

Posted: 28 Jul 2011 11:15 AM PDT

With the term Search Engine Optimization (SEO) being bandied about in hopes most people won’t know what it really consists of, scam artists are making bank by promising the moon. SubmitEdge is a reputable SEO company that has seen many clients of other less honest businesses come running to their real SEO Services after being burned by these same scam perpetrating firms.

Since the beginning of the search engine take-over, self-titled "SEO Experts" have made unrealistic promises and offered guaranteed rankings, using less than desirable tactics. While Submitedge is a 100% ‘white hatSEO Firm, these scam based offerings from ‘black-hat’ SEO firms continue to fool customers into thinking they can rank fast, high, and pay only pennies.

Rather than listen to some self styles  "SEO guru" who can make all your dreams come true, do your own research so you understand SEO and can avoid getting pulled into a scam. The best defense against SEO scams is learning more about the subject, or at least knowing what ‘red flags’ to look for when an SEO company starts making grandiose claims that could result in a scam.

Many SEO scams will guarantee 1st place Google

These claims had darn well better come backed by a written guarantee that states failure to comply with the terms of the contract will result in a refund of all or part of your money.  Even Google says, "Beware of SEOs that claim to guarantee rankings". Submitedge offers a guarantee that if we do not get the ranking we promised in the specific time frame and for the price we quote, you will receive at least a partial refund based on specific agreements in each contract. We know every site has competition, and sometimes you could run up against another website with a limitless budget who is impossible to dethrone from the #1 spot, so we strive to only promise what we can actually deliver, and to back up our claims in writing!!

Many SEO scam artists will say they have an ‘in’ with ‘someone at Google’

Oh, please. this is a sure sign of a scam. No SEO company in existence has a "special relationship" or access to a "priority submission" with Google.

Some SEO scam companies will offer you ‘free’ SEO trial services

Again, NOPE. SEO is complex and time consuming, and in order to achieve results, real work must be done on an ongoing basis. Any results created by a ‘free trial’ are almost certain to be a scam brought on by the so called ‘SEO expert’, and will result in you being damaged by black hat practices. If in order to give you a "free trial" they request your FTP username/password or ask for access to your hosting account, RUN. They will likely ruin your website and demand monies to repair it! Submnitedge will only ask for access to your website for onsite SEO and you will have a written contract with us by that time holding us liable and ensuring we do your site no harm.

SEO scammers will say they have a secret SEO process

There is no secret SEO process. As anyone who works for Submitedge can tell you, SEO is simply hard work and man-hours spent doing the necessary jobs of content creation, link building, and so on. Anyone can do SEO – most people just don’t have the time, which is why companies like Submitedge exist! Any legitimate SEO company should be able to explain exactly what (if anything) they will do to your site, as well as describe their link building strategy. If they dodge your questions, suspect a scam.

Now that you know what claims to ignore, come to Submitedge and ask about our white hat SEO practices. in over 5 years and after having worked on 18,000 websites, we have managed to get front page Google ranking for thousands of keywords, and our clients never have to worry about black hat scams or getting banned by Google. SEO is a slow process – so beware any company that promises ‘results in 48 hours’. Don’t get roped in by a scam – use Submitedge and get honest work that produces great results!

How Content Marketing Accelerates the Sales Cycle

Posted: 28 Jul 2011 04:30 AM PDT

Content Marketing Accelerates Sales Cycle

Many people are using the buzzword phrase “content marketing” these days, but what does it really mean?

Content is information — like a new page on your website explaining your services. Or it can be pictures. Or a video. Or a slideshow. Or a graphic, like an “infographic.” Or a blog post. Or any combination of the above. One of the beauties of the Internet, in addition to its ubiquitous “free” nature, is that there are so many ways content can be created and presented — including interactive or personalized custom programs. (Check out the video here that allows anyone to pull content from their Facebook page for a really cool custom interactive experience.)

But the content marketing that can help you the most is the kind of content that positions your company against your competition in the most subtle of ways – by actually providing something of value to your customers. Talk about jump-starting sales.

First let's talk about what kind of content marketing turns people off. Honestly, most of the stuff that companies do is self-serving, product-oriented content. Like another buy-one-get-one-free price promotion. Or maybe it's another *yawn* clearance sale. Or perhaps they'll be in attendance at yet another event, so “come by” and see them.

Those things have their place. But what do customers really long for? What are they NOT getting from you or your competitors that would actually be of benefit to them?

Let's look at an example. In talking with a very stylish young lady who works here at Vertical Measures, I found out that this girl buys loads of clothes. She's young, she's hip and she's all that. She's also athletic and likes the outdoors. And she's on every major clothing retailer's list.

Retail Content Marketing Trouble is, she has hardly ever seen anything that might help her out with new fashion style tips. Or more information about how a piece of clothing is actually made, or what it's made out of. Or, what to wear to what event in what weather. The possibilities are endless, and the thing is, that type of content — content that's largely missing — would be much more likely to sway her to buy and spend even more. She might even start feeling that one particular company is “better” than the rest of them, and her loyalty and budget might increase.

In her opinion, a retailer really doing a great job with content is REI. Not only do they provide great clothing/lifestyle information, but they localize it, and bring it down to the personal level that customers like her can relate to.

So what can YOU do in terms of content marketing to spark sales? It can take some creativity and imagination.

Or *drum roll* you could just talk to your customer service and sales staff. They have heard every objection, every complaint, every good story and every informational content tip that you could possibly take and leverage in your marketing efforts. Yet in most companies, they are ignored.

If you want to be better than your competition, be better than your competition. Use content marketing to its best advantage, by focusing less on you, you, you and more on them, them, them. What your customers want and need.

Add valuable content to your website, market it out on the Internet as well as your own email list and notice the increases in customer loyalty and sales volume.

You might have noticed that there has been very few updates on the Funny Potato website in the last few weeks? Well, there were good reasons for this. We were on vacations in Florida! :-)
3 nice weeks of vacations, including 3 major stops :

Daytona Beach : For the beach and the for the final flight of a space shuttle, on July 8th 2011. It was the very last flight of a space shuttle with the launch of Atlantis for the STS135 mission. After 30 years, the shuttles are retiring to various museums in the USA.

Shuttle Florida

(Minutes after the STS135 Space Shuttle Launch)

Key Largo : For snorkeling trips, nature, fishing and a day in Key West to see it's amazing sunset. For those who do not know, Key West is the southermost city on the Continental USA, at only 90 miles from Cuba! :-)
Orlando : 18 months ago, we visited the 4 main Disney Parks in Orlando, so this summer we went to see the 2 main Universal Studios parks. 2 very nice parks, including the great « Harry Potter Forbidden Journey » ride in the « Wizarding World of Harry Potter » area of the Isand of Adventure Universal Studios Park.

Vacations in Florida

Orlando being close to the Space Coast of Florida, we woke up at 5:30 on July 21th to hear the Double Sonic Boom of the Atlantis Shuttle when it came back to Earth! A huge BOOM BOOM! :-)

So, we are now back home, I will now have m ore time to work on the Funny Potato website! :-)

And you, did already have your vacations this summer?

Advances in Technology Aren’t Limited to Your PC!

Posted: 26 Jul 2011 10:11 PM PDT

http://www.chachasconeyisland.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/navy-ships-1.jpgMachine guns, death rays, lasers and yes – computers! Welcome to the new US Navy! The US Navy is undergoing an overhaul and the overhaul sounds a bit more like a cross between Dr. Evil and Star Wars than it does actual reality. The catch is that the future is now and thanks to computers the Navy is transforming itself into what some say is going to be a leaner, meaner stronger and smarter fighting machine – or protective unit depending on who you are selling the concept to. All of it hinges on computers and their programmers.

It used to be reality that men who sweat and oozed blood had to man the guns on the deck of a ship. Someone had to aim the gun and pull the trigger as well as another someone to keep feeding guns ammunition. The machine gun has always been the classic example of this. Then the day came when guns could be fired via a remote control so no actual human had to stand on the deck. Eventually guns became "smarter" with a computer deciding not only when and where to fire but the rate of fire. Who needs a human?

60 years ago that would have been considered the stuff of Sci-Fi, but it became a reality. 30 years ago lasers where nothing more than a cool light saber type thing used to fight Darth Vader for most people – but now the laser is a part of everyday life that nobody bats an eye at. That's why it should not sound so crazy that Boeing and BAE are using some of the finest minds in computer programming along with top engineers to develop what could be the first publicly acknowledged, working, "death ray."

As phenomenal as the hardware is, it is so complex requiring absolute precision that it has to be effectively handled by a machine. There will be no Luke and Han Solo hanging out in pods blasting one laser shot after another. The modern vision will be a computer looking not much different from any other model running thousands of calculations to pinpoint one small dot on a target that will allow for destruction with as little collateral damage as possible. No human could hope to be so precise and steely nerved. It is all possible only because software engineers and mobile communications have become so advanced that the hardware that was once only a dream can now be reality.

Free Guide to Press Releases for Buzz and SEO Backlinks.

Posted: 26 Jul 2011 04:06 PM PDT

Since the Panda update from Google many people are wondering what methods can be used that build backlinks that are still affective for seo.  I have found that most white hat seo methods still work but not all work as well as they use to. So the best thing to do is to be more creative in your approach and your seo campaign.  There are still many ways to get good quality backlinks that requite just a little effort and are simple to do.  One alternative method that has been pretty popular in recent years and more so now is the use of Press Releases to drive traffic and for backlink juice.

Before the Release of Panda the use of article marketing, forum comment and blog commenting was often good enough to move you up in rank and give you some nice backlinks for serps and PR.  Today those methods are still viable but it is getting harder and harder to improve your rank with just those methods alone. To be successful we now must use a variety of tools and techniques to achieve those sought after quality backlinks that Google loves. One way of doing so is through Press Releases. These are easy to do and there are many free places that you can submit too. There are also some pricier Press Release service that may offer even better submission to higher quality pages, though I have yet to try any of these myself.

The benefit of  Press Releases is the high volume of relevant and authority sites your PR might reach. Some are major newspapers and websites with very high pagerank and authority. Perfect for the link juice you are looking for. You can receive a tremendous amounts of inbound links to your website or individual page from just a few well written and placed Press Releases. The beautiful thing about press releases is that you can your links and anchor text any where in the document so it is much more natural than most articles where the backlinks are placed at the bottom in the Bio section.

Just like articles , press releases have to be done properly in order to be affective. There is a method and layout that you must follow in order to be accepted into each submission service. Not only that you have to write a press release like a press release not a standard article. Doing these things right can be extremely beneficial, doing them wrong can be a total waste of time with little reward for your efforts.

I received a pretty informative guide recently that I would like to share with you guys. I will email it free to anyone who belongs to my mailing list.  The works is not mine but it goes into great detail on how to properly do Press Releases and I myself found it quite informative. I do have resell rights to to sell it but I decided to give it away.  I cannot print on my webpage so I figured I will give it to anyone who joins my newsletter mailing list.  I have a lot of useful guides that I would love to share with you all and they all are free.  So if you are interested please sign up to our newsletter to receive exclusive tips and guides.

thanks !

How-To: Questions on Quora

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 04:30 AM PDT

A really brilliant resource on the internet for keeping up to date with what’s going on in your particular industry and for making new connections with others in your field is Quora. It’s like a grown-up version of Yahoo Answers with loads of added functionality. It’s a question and answer website like no other, where you can pose a question and expect to have it answered by global experts in that field.

Find and Follow

Once you’ve registered, you can look for people to follow (all of the top tech bloggers and writers are on there) and join in the conversations that are going on to find out the very latest news on the subjects that interest you.

Find and Follow Friends on QuoraAs well as following people, you can follow Topics or individual Questions, ensuring that you will be notified every time an answer is given to a relevant query. You can add new Questions or even new Topics and follow the topics that are most relevant and interesting to you, either on a professional or a personal level.

It’s also a great resource for discovering new information on all sorts of subjects, with people regularly dropping links into their posts which can be a great way of finding stuff you would never have otherwise found.

A Community of Experts

The Quora community includes world experts in all types of subjects from Social Media, Technology Trends, Business and Entrepreneurship to more mundane topics such as Gardening, Cooking and Childcare. The answers provided are always well thought out and contain valuable insights that would be hard to find posed so succinctly elsewhere. If you’re starting a new company and need advice, just ask on Quora (in the Startups Topic) and you will be treated to a wealth of information from seasoned specialists who are leaders in their field.

Quora StatisticsIf you follow a particular Topic in Quora, you can be sure that you will be bang up to date with what’s going on in that field, reading posts by some of the most respected though-leaders and experts, ensuring that you have a balanced view on the most recent developments. If you find a question that you’d like to follow, you’re able to view statistics for that question, including how many people are following it, who they are and you can share it via Twitter, Facebook or WordPress. That’s a pretty powerful way of getting attention for a question and putting the question out there to encourage people to answer it.

If you’re following the top tech bloggers on Quora, they are posting on a regular basis, often with links to articles or blog posts where you will find the most up to date information on the web. If you have a particular question that you’d like to ask of somebody, it’s possible to send a direct message to their Quora Inbox, unlike some other social media platforms where you can only connect directly in this way if the person is following you too.

Google+ on Quora

Google Plus

At present there is a lot of discussion on Quora about the launch of Google+ where you will find all types of tips and tricks on how to use this new resource to the best advantage. Although most of these discussions are also taking place on Google+, Quora seems to contain the crème de la crème of the discussion, without all the “noise” and frivolity that is appearing on Google+ at present. Quora is a great resource for damping down the “noise” and getting to the nitty gritty.

Get some Followers

A really good way to gain followers on Quora is to join in the conversation! Very often, somebody will ask a Question and this will turn into an ongoing conversation with many people joining in to express their thoughts and views. If you come across a Question that happens to be in a field that you are really familiar with, post your answer (make sure that it’s well written and either addresses the original question or is a response to one of the answers. If you are able to offer some sort of insight into the Question that has not already been provided, you will find that others respond to your answer and sometimes start to follow you and often contact you directly to your Quora Inbox. Another great way of making your mark on Quora is that you are able to provide a Description of a Topic (make sure that you know your subject inside out if you’re going to do this) which will earn you the extra kudos of being a thought-leader in that particular subject.

As a Social Media platform, Quora seems to be one of the more “serious” options. People on Quora are not giving you a blow-by-blow account of everything they do throughout the day, there are no flame wars going on, nothing irrelevant whatsoever – just a wealth of information from some of the world’s experts in all types of subjects.

Google Webmaster Tools: A Beginner’s Guide to Installation

Posted: 26 Jul 2011 06:25 AM PDT

In recent weeks I have set up Google Webmaster Tools for a number of different clients, some of whom wanted some documentation on how this could be done.

Based on that document I have decided to publish this very basic beginner's guide for those who are unfamiliar with the set up process of Google Webmaster Tools.

What is Google Webmaster Tools?
Google Webmaster Tools (GWT) is a free and easy way for webmasters to view their own website the way that Google sees it. GWT is a free tool that can be used for websites of all sizes, and features information such as:

  • Which of your pages are included in Google's Index
  • Any errors encountered while crawling your site
  • Search queries that list your site as a result
  • Which sites link to yours
  • And more

This guide covers how to set up GWT in seven easy steps, from creating an account to adding and deleting users and associating your Google Analytics.

Step 1 – Google Account
To set up Google Webmaster Tools you will need to register for a Google account. If you have access to any of their other products such as Analytics, Gmail or Google Places then you will already have an account.

If you don't have an account, you can associate your work email address with a Google account to take advantage of their products by clicking here.

Step 2 – Register for Google Webmaster Tools
Visit Google Webmaster Tools, and register for a Google Webmaster Tools Account, and sign in.

Step 3 – Add Website URL
Once signed in, you’ll be able to add your website address by clicking on the "Add a Site" button, typing the address and clicking "Continue". When entering your domain, you can either add the top level domain (www.example.com) or you are able to add folders if you would like to target a specific area of the site. This is particularly useful if your site is split into regions or country codes and to target different international markets (www.example.com/folder1/folder2/).

Add Website URL to Google Webmaster Tools

Once you have clicked "Continue", you will automatically be taken to the verification screen to choose your verification method.

Step 4 – Verify Website
GWT provides you with four different methods of validating your website, including uploading an HTML to the root server, adding a meta tag to the homepage, linking to Google Analytics and using DNS. Choose the one that is most suitable to your needs.

Upload HTML File to Server
GWT can provide you with a blank HTML file with a specific code attached to it that associates with your account. You can easily download this by clicking the link "this HTML verification file". Once you have downloaded this file, you need to upload it directly to the root file of your server then click "Verify" to confirm the placement has been made. Once verification has been made, you will start to see some data population and you can move on to step 6.

HTML File Upload Google Webmaster Tools

If you need to verify at a later date then you can move on to Step 5 when you are ready to verify the account.

Add a Meta Tag
GWT provides you with a meta tag that needs to be added to the <head> tag as an alternative method to adding the HTML file to the website. This meta tag just needs to be copied from GWT (shown below) and added to the homepage of the chosen website. Once this has been implemented, click the "Verify" button to start catching data (move to step 6). If you are not in a position to verify the account, click "Not Now" and come back to Step 5 when you are ready.

Meta Tag Verification Google Webmaster Tools

Link to Google Analytics Account
GWT provides you with an easier way of verifying your site if you use Google Analytics through the same Google Account that you have set up. If you are using two different accounts, for GWT and Google Analytics, then this option will not work. SEOptimise recommend that you use the same account for all Google products and if it's a business account, create a central account for the entire business. To verify the Google Analytics account, click "Verify". Once verified move on to Step 6.

Google Analytics Verification Google Webmaster Tools

Add DNS Records to your Domain
This option is for those who can sign in to a domain registrar or hosting provider and add a new DNS record. When you choose from the drop down menu (as indicated below), GWT provides instructions. After following the instructions, you need to verify that this has been completed correctly by clicking the "Verify" button. If this works, move on to Step 6; otherwise repeat the instructions or choose another method of verification.

DNS Verification Google Webmaster Tools

Step 5 – How to Verify Once Method has been Implemented
If you were unable to verify at the time of setting up GWT, then you can verify it at a later date. When logging in to GWT, you will be presented with the websites that you have set up and a link to "Verify the Site" underneath the Manage heading. Click the "Verify this Site" link.

Verify Google Webmaster Tools

You will be presented with a similar screen as discussed in Step 4, where you need to choose your validation method. The validation method that you choose on this occasion needs to be the same as what you had originally chosen when setting up GWT.

Example: If you had originally chosen to add a HTML file to the root, then you need to reselect the HTML file verification.

Step 6 – Manage Users
GWT allows the administrator of the account to provide access to multiple users by adding them to the Verification Details via the "Manage" link as you log in to the tool.

Manage Users in Google Webmaster Tools

Once you have clicked the "Manage" link, you will be directed through to the Verification Details page, where you will be allowed to add/edit/delete the users who have access to the data via their own Google account.

To add a new user, click the "Add an owner" button and enter their email address. This will only work for users who have a registered Google Account, so if they do not currently have one please refer them to step 1.

Manage Users in Google Webmaster Tools

If you would like to remove any users who have been previously added then just click the "Unverify" link.

Step 7 – Associate Google Webmaster Tools with Google Analytics
If you use Google Analytics to track your website, then GWT allows you to import some data into the Google Webmaster Tools interface to add extra value to your data. This option will only be available if your Google Analytics account is associated with the same account that GWT is set up on. To add Google Analytics to your profile, click "Manage" and select "Google Analytics Profile".

Associated Google Analytics with Google Webmaster Tools

After you select "Google Analytics Profile", you will be redirected to the Google Analytics page within GWT, where you can select the Google Analytics account/profile that is relevant to the website. Using the tick box, select the profile relevant to your account and click the save button; this will begin to insert data direct from your analytics account. If you haven't got Google Analytics but would like to create an account, click "Create Google Analytics Account".

Associate Google Analytics with Google Webmaster Tools

So if you followed all the steps correctly you should now have fully installed Google Webmaster Tools account that will have data about your website populating the dashboards soon.

I hope you found the Google Webmaster Tools: A Beginner’s Guide to Installation useful. If you have any comments on the guide I have provided or on Google Webmaster Tools in general I would love to hear from you, either below or on Twitter @danielbianchini.
